Decarbonisation, electrification, and market change: Preparing for 2050 with Insight by Volue

The power market is undergoing a period of rapid change. Decarbonisation, electrification, and new market structures are reshaping the way electricity is generated, consumed, and traded across Europe. As such, gaining a clear view of long-term price dynamics has never been more important.

Supporting strategic decision making

Insight by Volue’s Long-Term Power Reports (LTP) are trusted by producers, large consumers, and investors across Europe as an essential input for strategic decision-making. The reports combine scenario-based price forecasts with in-depth analysis of energy policy, industrial trends, and market design, offering a clear view of how European power markets may evolve over the next three decades.

Espen Andreassen, Senior Analyst, Insight by Volue, and one of the report’s authors, explains: “At Insight by Volue, we run our own market price simulations across Europe, covering Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and the UK. For Central Europe we use our in-house simulator, built on a least-cost dispatch and unit commitment framework.

“Every data point is carefully prepared and quality-checked, ensuring the highest level of accuracy. To capture real-world variation, we also factor in weather scenarios from 1986 to 2015, which shape inflows for hydropower, time series for wind and solar generation, and consumption patterns,” he adds.

Emerging technologies and market trends

“Our long-term report also addresses emerging technologies and recent market trends, including AI-driven, power-intensive processes, as well as innovations on both the consumption and generation sides of the energy system,” says Arnt Sollie, General Manager, Insight by Volue.

“I also believe that a key strength of the report is its quarterly publication. By updating the analysis four times per year, new developments can be incorporated into our simulations in a timely manner. That ensures that if a trend wasn’t fully captured in one quarter, it will be included in the next, keeping the report continuously relevant,” he adds.

Independence and neutrality

“Another important element of our report is its independence and neutrality. Our analysis is built on data, not influenced by external stakeholders or clients. This makes the forecasts objective, transparent, and bankable, a quality that is highly valued by our customers,” notes Espen.

Insight by Volue integrates several factors into its modelling, helping customers evaluate not only the current outlook, but also how and why forecasts have evolved over time. The detailed archive function allows users to trace past forecasts and assumptions, showing how shifts in market conditions directly influenced projections.

Arnt continues: “Unlike a one-off consultancy report, the LTP has always been presented as a living, evolving analysis, continuously updated to reflect market dynamics while remaining transparent about the assumptions driving change.”

Insight by Volue recently hosted a webinar to give energy professionals clarity on what's driving Europe's energy future. The webinar illustrated the approach to its long-term power price forecasting that has repeatedly proven more accurate than industry benchmarks. Drawing on the September 2025 edition of the LTP for Central Europe, its analysts shared their findings and perspectives on what lies ahead, including exclusive insights into UK power prices.

The team discussed how the UK’s growing reliance on offshore wind would require balancing from batteries and hydrogen electrolysers, adding strain to the grid. We also highlighted that the government’s push for new nuclear increased the need for interconnectors with Europe, with our weather-year simulations showing their role in enabling exports during windy periods and safeguarding supply during wind lulls.

In the webinar, which can now be watched in full on-demand, the team also explored why long-term price forecasts are essential for strategic planning and shared Insight by Volue’s approach and philosophy for developing them. The discussion covered trends in the electricity system out to 2050, along with medium-term developments in renewables and power consumption. The session concluded with insights into the future of gas and LNG in Europe, rounding out a comprehensive view of the forces shaping Europe’s energy transition.
