As distributed energy resources, EV charging infrastructure, flexible demand, and energy storage continue to reshape the electricity system, Elmea recognized the need for a modern digital foundation capable of evolving alongside the grid. The company sought a solution that would provide a trusted, up-to-date view of network data while supporting future growth and increasing operational complexity.
For Elmea, the challenge was not managing the grid itself. It was managing the technology infrastructure supporting it.
Its on-premise environment required ongoing attention, including server administration, security maintenance, certificate renewals, scheduled tasks, and integration management. These activities consumed valuable engineering capacity that could otherwise be dedicated to core operational and planning responsibilities.
At the same time, the pace of change across distribution networks was accelerating. New distributed generation, EV charging points, and emerging asset types were being connected faster than traditional planning cycles could accommodate. Elmea needed systems that could continuously evolve alongside the network while maintaining accurate documentation, trusted data, and efficient planning processes.

To address these challenges, Elmea adopted Volue NIO, a SaaS platform built specifically for grid documentation, planning, and operational intelligence.
By moving to NIO, Elmea established a modern digital foundation for network management while transferring responsibility for infrastructure, security, availability, and platform operations to Volue. NIO's fully managed SaaS model reduces IT complexity and enables Elmea to focus on developing and operating the grid.
NIO provides a unified environment for network documentation, planning, calculation, maintenance, outage management, and operations. Built on a shared data foundation, the platform gives grid operators a trusted network model that supports more informed planning, operational decision-making, and investment prioritization as the grid evolves.
A key benefit of NIO is the ability to maintain a single, accurate, and continuously updated view of the network across planning, maintenance, operations, and reporting. This helps ensure decisions are based on trusted data while reducing manual work and fragmentation between systems.
Elmea also became the first utility to go live on NIO's SaaS platform. While this represented an early move into a new operating model, it also provided close collaboration with Volue and early access to the platform's ongoing innovation and development roadmap.
Since moving to NIO SaaS, Elmea has significantly reduced the operational overhead associated with maintaining on-premise infrastructure. Server failures, certificate issues, integration challenges, and maintenance activities that previously occupied engineering resources are now managed by Volue.
This shift allows Elmea's teams to spend more time on operational priorities, network development, and strategic planning rather than technology administration.
The continuous delivery model provides ongoing access to platform enhancements, including AI-enhanced capabilities, without the need for disruptive upgrade projects. As a result, Elmea benefits from a digital foundation that continuously evolves alongside changing operational requirements and industry demands.
