The New Economics of Battery Trading in Europe

From asset to algorithm. You did nothing wrong. You still fell behind.

Two identical batteries now earn very different returns. The difference is no longer the asset: it's how well it's traded. This is the report that maps the shift.

WHERE THE ADVANTAGE WENT

The asset you were proud of is now table stakes.

Everyone got better. That's why you're earning less.

When hardware costs converge, the battery can't be your moat. What's left to compete on is grid access, market access, and trading skill, and only trading skill is a repeatable advantage.

WHAT'S CHANGING IN THE MARKET

Four pressures, mounting at once.

None of them are solved yet.

EU day-ahead moved to 15-minute products on 1 October 2025. Twenty-four hourly periods became ninety-six. More signals, more opportunity, thinner margin for a wrong call.

HOW THE BEST OPERATORS RESPOND

Some problems can't be solved. Only navigated.

The three body trap

The asset, the market, and the crowd of rivals all pull on each other at once, a system with no closed-form solution. Two bodies give you one clean equation. Add a third and the maths breaks.

There is no formula. Anyone selling one hasn't understood the problem.

The operating loop is the product

  • Forecast  Price, volume, imbalance, every signal, continuously.
  • Allocate  Commit limited capacity across markets without conflict.
  • Execute  Trade the intervals fast and accurately.
  • Re-plan  Re-price the position as each new signal lands.

It's the operating model, not the asset, that's the moat.

“The revenue doesn't disappear. It moves, toward whoever can follow it fastest.”

WHERE THIS IS HEADING

The markets keep getting faster. So will the assets.

Fifteen minutes won't be the final step. Complexity compounds on both sides, and each new dimension is another reason the operating model, not the hardware, decides who wins.

  • Finer granularity  Tighter gate closures, more intervals to trade.
  • Co-location & hybrids  Longer duration. Each adds a dimension to the problem.
  • Portfolios & VPPs  One decision layer across many assets and markets
  • Automation  Decisions automate; people set strategy and risk.

The gap between strong and weak operators is about to widen. Which side are you building for?

GET THE REPORT

The whole story, in one place.

Everything the campaign has been circling: the data, the operating model, and the questions every owner, trader, and investor should be asking.

  • The asset is a commodity. The intelligence isn't.

  • Why two identical batteries earn very different returns.

  • Where value is moving, and who captures it.
